How to determine the life of a stamping die

As the core element of ​​metal stamping​​ processes, the importance of ​​stamping dies​​ is self-evident. It not only determines the quality and precision of ​​sheet metal fabrication​​ but also directly affects production efficiency, cost control, and product stability. A high-quality ​​stamping die​​ ensures accurate ​​metal forming​​ during the process, reduces scrap rates, increases production speed, and enhances economic benefits. The design and manufacturing level of ​​progressive stamping dies​​ also reflects the overall strength of China's manufacturing industry.

Punching burrs grow fastest in ​​metal fabrication​​ processes, so die maintenance intervals are often determined by burr height. When the blanking clearance is fixed during design, die life can be estimated by observing burrs in the punching area. If a punch has sharp corners, chipping occurs earlier, leading to premature burrs. Chamfering sharp corners is an effective solution. Mold materials for convex/concave dies—ranging from SKS → SKD → powdered high-speed steel → cemented carbide—progressively increase die life. Better surface finish and lubrication also extend longevity. However, poor chip evacuation in die pockets or weak die rigidity (due to inadequate guide systems) shortens life.

Die life includes ​​maintenance life (grinding cycle)​​ and ​​total life​​. For monolithic (rigid frame) dies, total life is clear since each grind thins the plate. For ​​inlay dies​​, replacing or regrinding inserts extends life indefinitely—until insert holes loosen or plates deform. Long-term ​​deep drawing​​ or ​​stamping​​ stresses cause cumulative plate deformation, eventually degrading positional accuracy. To maximize plate life, use thicker, hardened, deep-cooled plates; for low-cost, short-life dies (e.g., small ​​deep drawn​​ part batches), thinner plates or unhardened inserts suffice. Similarly, internal guides can use durable pillar/sleeve systems or simple plate holes for low-volume ​​progressive stamping dies​​.

Molds vary for small- or large-volume ​​metal stamping​​ production. Balancing quality, life, and cost is challenging—especially for complex, low-volume ​​sheet metal fabrication​​ where budget constraints limit optimal die solutions.
