In sheet metal fabrication, the elastic nature of metal causes springback after deformation. Even when a blank is pressed tightly against a mold, minor defects can occur. Unlike metal spinning—which applies gradual, uniform pressure—metal stamping exerts localized force, exacerbating this issue. Thus, only metal spinning achieves the precision required for high-tolerance components.
Another distinction lies in tooling: Stamping dies always require paired molds to sandwich the blank, while spinning needs just one mold, significantly reducing tooling costs. This explains why spinning is preferred for prototyping and low-volume metal fabrication. However, progressive stamping dies remain more efficient for mass production of less precision-critical parts. 2. Challenges in Metal Spinning & Deep Drawn Parts
For thin blanks (~0.1mm): Even slight pressure from the spinning roller may cause unintended deformation, demanding extreme caution in metal forming.
For thick blanks (>5mm): Excessive force risks damaging the roller’s tip, especially with hard metals in deep drawn components.
Spinning also requires exceptional skill for large, elongated products, as the process relies on uniform stretching. Since forming is operator-dependent, even master craftsmen’s output may vary.
